Desing and Technology
Our Design and Technology curriculum inspires our pupils to be creative, innovative and practical in order to design, make and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems. They are taught to do this in a variety of contexts with a wide range of criteria to consider as they develop excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills. They learn how to take and evaluate risks and develop learning skills such as resourcefulness and resilience. In each programme of learning, they acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Learning is often linked to a theme that enhances the purpose for learning. The acquisition of knowledge and skills are progressional and pupils build on prior learning within the year or previous years. The curriculum has been designed so that key knowledge and skills are revisited in subsequent modules or programmes of learning. This is to ensure learning is secure and deeper understanding can be achieved. Our curriculum teaches pupils technical knowledge, cooking and nutrition. At its core, the curriculum teaches pupils about how design and technology impacts on our daily lives, welfare and productivity of individuals and society.
Our pupils learn to:
- develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
- build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
- critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
- understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
